General procedure for performing an Active DirectoryMigration
Microsoft Active DirectoryMigration Tool (ADMT)
ADMT has been developed by Microsoft and can be downloaded forfree. You can find the link at the end of thispage. The current version of ADMT is 3.2 and must be installed on aWindows Server 2008 R2+. Please prepare anSQL instance before the installation. Allnecessary information is stored there.
ADMT in version 3.2 supports the following Active Directory DomainModes:
- AD Domain mode 2003
- AD Domain mode 2008 and 2008 R2
- AD Domain mode 2012 and 2012 R2
User, groups, computer objects and permissions can bemigrated to Windows systems with ADMT. By installing the toolPasswordExportService you can also migrate the passwordsof the user objects. Active Directory Migration Tool supports theSID history migration, so that users can still access a variety ofresources, without requiring them to be additionally authorized tothe migrated account.
Data or permissions from applications (such asMicrosoft Exchange or SQL Server) can not be migrated with ADMT.
Dell/Quest Migration Manager forActive Directory
QMM is licensed per managed user. The link tothe manufacturer’s product page can be found at the end of thisarticle.
With QMM you can migrate users, groups, computer accounts,organizational units, sites, and trusts. QMM also supports the SIDhistory migration, so that users can continuously access a varietyof resources, without additionally authorize them to the migratedaccount.
QMM has some features that ADMT does not have.You can set up a directory synchronization so thatchanges in AD objects are automatically synchronized in the otherenvironment. This is really helpful for big migrations projects,which run over a longer period. In addition, Quest offers moreopportunities to organize resource migrations.
The following applications are supported with theappropriate license of QMM:
- Exchange mailboxes (mailbox contents, permissions and Outlookprofile updates)
- SQL databases (permissions)
- SCCM (permissions)
- IIS (permissions)
- Agentless updates for example, NAS filers
